Phelps’s unique winning streak at the recent Beijing Olympics saw Mark Spitz’ thirty six year old record of seven gold medals at the 1972 Munich games finally eclipsed.
All that gold around Phelps’s neck has turned him into a global celebrity. Undoubtedly the greatest swimmer of all time, and arguably the greatest athlete of all time. According to Nancy Clark, a sports nutritionist in Boston, Massachusetts, Phelps' intake is just what his appetite requires. "He's a limousine, he's tall. A limousine needs more gas than a Mini Cooper," said Clark, who has worked with Olympic athletes. "Hunger is simply a request for fuel."
In fact if a carb-loading diet were an Olympic competition, then the U.S. swimmer would probably win a medal there, too. His day starts with three cheese-tomato-onion-fried egg sandwiches, an omelette, three powdered-sugar-covered slices of French toast, a bowl of grits and three chocolate chip pancakes to top it off, according to news reports.
Phelps has crossed the boundary from sport-star to celebrity. Successful Olympians are very much in the spotlight – for some it is the pinnacle of a life time’s work and effort. Like a limousine, they are viewed as high performance and high interest personalities. Just like limousines they turn heads and their very appearance at an event confers a special status to it.
