Hummer Limousines as Police Vehicles
In an attempt to increase the 'visible impact’ of police presence Melbourne police are set to patrol the city in Hummer vehicles. According to Assistant Commissioner, Gary Jamieson, five Hummers will begin patrols next month.
Assistant Commissioner Jamieson says he hopes the measures will stamp out an increase in bad behaviour. "We will continue to come up with innovative solutions to try and deal with what we say is a change and deteriorated behaviour of young people," he said.” The idea of going to Hummers is that it's about trying to measure visible impact. So we've got to try and introduce something which might look different to our current fleet of vehicles."
The Victorian State Premier admitted that it would take years for violence in the city to be reduced., saying that they are not going to get on top of this problem in a day, a week, a month or a year, it's going to take a couple of years to get on top of this issue. He also said that it will mean tougher liquor licensing laws, more responsibility from licence holders, and more responsibility, too, from individuals themselves."
While any measure aimed at reducing violence and drunken behaviour in society must be commended, it still remains to be seen whether or not the image of local police driving around in Hummers, like some action heroes, will be taken seriously enough to have an impact. The fact that Hummer hire limos are becoming more common in Australia, especially for use as party buses, may also be detrimental to the efficacy of the exercise.
In fact, in the UK, where the use of Hummers as limos and party buses is so prevalent, they would have no authority as police vehicles. Notwithstanding the violence and drunken behaviour of a few undesirables why not rise above the occasion and organise a law abiding party anywhere in the UK through HireLimos.
